How to Deactivate DEWA Utility Services

Anyone leasing or buying real property within the UAE, especially through the best real estate developers in Dubai, must formally connect with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). When you move into a new home, connecting to DEWA and activating your utility services is essential.

If you plan to take a vacation or go on an extended business trip, you may need to deactivate the utility services to avoid accumulating debt temporarily. Here’s how to deactivate DEWA and avoid future financial obligations.

DEWA Services

DEWA is a state-owned organization that provides Dubai’s sole electricity and water service provider. DEWA offers services to various customers, including businesses, government agencies, and private individuals.

After moving into your new or rented home, setting up a DEWA account to access utilities is crucial. If you plan to move or relocate, you can transfer or cancel your DEWA account, either temporarily or permanently.

In recent years, DEWA has undergone digital transformation to enhance its customer-friendliness. Today, many services are accessible online. You can initiate processes such as connecting your new home to the DEWA system, paying utility bills, or submitting complaints via their online platform.

Deactivating DEWA Account

If you are planning to relocate to Dubai or move to a different city, it is essential to know how to deactivate DEWA services to avoid any financial implications.

It is important to deactivate the power and water supply before leaving Dubai or any other Emirate. This can be done in person at the nearest DEWA Customer Service Centre, via the DEWA website, or through the mobile application.

You must select the date, time, and day of your departure. DEWA will stop providing water and electricity services by recording the most recent meter reading on the selected date. DEWA will then process your deactivation request and send the final bill to you via email within 24 hours of the move-out date you specified in your request.

You can pay the bill and any other charges at any time that is convenient for you.

Fees for Deactivating DEWA Services

  • Small meter: up to 100 AED
  • Large meter: 300 AED
  • Knowledge fee: 10 AED
  • Innovation fee: 10 AED

Thukher and Sanad cardholders can receive a 50% discount on DEWA disconnection charges. Once the disconnection is complete, you can apply for a refund of the necessary security deposit when activating DEWA services. You can initiate the DEWA deactivation online, with or without login credentials.

DEWA Deactivation with a User ID

If you have a DEWA Customer ID and UAE Pass, you can use these to access the DEWA website. Select “Deactivation of Electricity/Water” and follow the instructions.

  1. Enter the 10-digit DEWA number and UAE Pass number for your contract.
  2. Pay the balance using your credit or debit card.
  3. Enter your departure date and phone number so a DEWA representative can contact you.
  4. Choose your preferred method for receiving the DEWA deposit refund: bank transfer or cheque.
  5. You will receive an SMS confirming your move-out notice.
  6. Ensure that power and water are turned off on the day you specify.

DEWA Deactivation Without a User ID

If you do not have a DEWA account or forget your login details, you can deactivate utilities as follows:

  • Visit the DEWA website and select “Deactivation of Electricity/Water.”
  • Choose “Apply Online (Without Login).”
  • Enter your DEWA contract number and phone number.
  • Receive a one-time password (OTP) via email or text message.
  • Use the OTP to access your account. Follow the instructions to pay the balance, specify the move-out date, and choose your preferred method of receiving the DEWA security deposit refund.

If you plan to leave the premises in the next two weeks after submitting the deactivation request, you may pay the final bill at the time of your departure. DEWA will email you an invoice for the remaining balance within 24 hours of the specified move-out date.

If the final bill exceeds the deposit amount, DEWA will issue a new invoice. If the bill exceeds the security deposit, DEWA will refund the remaining amount by cheque or online transfer.

Other Ways to Deactivate DEWA

If you already have a DEWA account, you can also request deactivation using the DEWA App. The process is similar to deactivating services online.

Alternatively, you can submit a request in person at a DEWA Customer Happiness Centre, where a team of experts will assist you throughout the procedure.

The following information is required at the Customer Happiness Center:

  • Your DEWA account number
  • Emirates ID
  • The date for water and electricity disconnection
  • A valid mobile number

The DEWA staff will review your request, provide you with a move-out notice number, and offer various options for receiving your security deposit refund.

In a Nutshell

You can deactivate DEWA utilities through your account online via the DEWA website, the DEWA App, or by visiting a Customer Happiness Center. Remember to disconnect the utilities before leaving the UAE to avoid fines or forfeiting your security deposit.
